MATH AND SCIENCE HOMEWORK
*Note about IXL and Buzzmath: If an individual section is taking longer than 30 minutes students can stop and receive full credit (as long as they were working hard on it). If a student is answering hundreds of questions for a particular section though that is showing me they're guessing. Students should take their time to answer questions - they can google to learn more and read the explanations when they get a question wrong. The science topics (and some of the math) will be about material we do not cover in class - maybe they've been exposed to it in prior years or maybe it's new material for them. I'm assigning these sections to encourage them to become independent learners. (This is mostly for my reference to know what has been assigned so far: A1, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, C1, D1, E1, E2, E3, E4, F1, F2, G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, H1, H2, H3, I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6, J1, J2, J3, J4, J5, J6, K1, K2, K3, L1, L2, L3, L4, L5, M1, M2, M3, N1, N2, O1, O2, O3, O4, P1,P2, P3, P4, P5, Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, R1 *note: bold represents quarter 4 assignments - missing quarter 3 assignments can still be made up in quarter 4 for extra points in quarter 4)
Week of 6/13-617
Wednesday: All old Buzzmath and IXL is due tomorrow morning; Students show your parents the site you worked on today: desmos.com and practice with the graphing calculator. Or show them the activities you used at student.desmos.com and type in codes 9ct8, sy2k, ksy4 or 48ef.
Tuesday: Work on Buzzmath and IXL that are due on Thursday
Monday: Create a table, graph and word problem that represent each of these equations: 1) y = 7x; 2) y = -3x; 3) y = x - 8; 4) y = 2/3x - 4; Continue to work on Buzzmath and IXL that are due on Thursday
*Quarter 4 project document and rubric is attached on the math page.
*Here are the dates for upcoming online tests:
Thursday 6/2 - Illinois Science Assessment - this is new this year and will be tested in 5th and 8th grade. We haven't received much information about it, but I found some more information here if you're interested: http://www.isbe.net/assessment/isa.htm. This will not count towards academic centers. Both classes will take the test on this date.
Tuesday 6/7 - Room 300 will take the Reading NWEA
Wednesday 6/8 - Room 301 will take the Reading NWEA
Thursday 6/9 - Both classes will take the Math NWEA
If you want to prepare more for any of the above tests you can encourage your students to practice Buzzmath and IXL more than already assigned (ELA topics can also be accessed in IXL). Khan academy is also a good resource to use for extra math help.

Week of 5/9-5/13
Friday: Check In #3 is due on Monday - must have everything you researched online (patterns, history, uses for Pascal's triangle, research specific to main topic). Printouts from websites are ok for research since this is only a check in, but on the project board in 2 weeks that will not be acceptable. Students must describe everything in their own words. Help them avoid plagiarism.
Thursday: complete 2.3, p. 39-47 #7-15 is homework; #16-24 is extra credit, but they had time in class to work on it; the first Buzzmath assignment sent today and IXL section I5 were graded as classwork with the substitute (we had science meetings today); the other new Buzzmath assignments and IXL (J6, K2, L3, N2) are due on Friday 5/20

***They should all have a few patterns they noticed in general and some explanations of why they happen. Here are some other necessities for each topic:
Topic 1) Must show how to make triangular numbers; must show where they are in Pascal's Triangle; must explain why they are there; must attempt to create the formula for triangular numbers by trying the two methods we went over in class
Topic 2) Must have at least three triangles done so far - one for multiples of 2, one for multiples of 3 and one for a different multiple (or even look up some dealing with modular arithmetic - ex: 2 mod 3 which is 2 more than a multiple of 3); must explain why the multiples of 3 are in that area - give proof why that happens and why it doesn't happen elsewhere
Topic 3) Must have at least three triangles done so far - the original with 1 boundaries; one with 2 boundaries and a different one; must have the sum of each row figured out; must explain why that is happening; must discuss other patterns they are noticing and why they are happening
Week of 4/25-4/29
Friday: Be prepared for Pascal check in #2 - have all the work you can do without out a computer: there should be multiple pages that include patterns you found and explanations for why they are happening; the main topic should be mostly completed too - after Monday you can look online for additional patterns and help on your main topic as well as the uses for Pascal's triangle; No new IXL this week since I want you to do a lot of review on Buzzmath - I have assigned 17 sections that cover a range of topics - you must complete at least 10 sections for full credit. I suggest you work on all of them - they are great review for PARCC and NWEA and they are just good practice to work on topics we've done this year as well as learning about new topics. You will have some time in school to work on Buzzmath too, but I suggest you use the weekend to do some of it.
Thursday: p. 23 #16 - try to create a rule for the pattern (hint: try to find the area of the shape or try the double sum method - we'll go over this in class tomorrow); Buzzmath and IXL are due tomorrow; Pascal check in on Monday
Wednesday: p. 21 #10 and 11; Create a picture pattern - at least 3 figures and try to create a formula to help you find how many squares are in figure 100.
Tuesday: No new hw; Buzzmath, IXL and Pascal due soon (see below)
Monday: p. 17-20 #4-8; Due Fri: Buzzmath and IXL (see below); Due Mon - check in #2 - students should basically have exhausted their efforts on the project. After this check in they will be able to look online and ask others for more help, but I would like to see what they have done on their own first.
Week of 4/11-4/15
Thursday and Friday: Due Fri 4/15: Bring in paragraph about 2nd step - see below; Buzzmath and IXL assigned on 4/4 is due 4/15; Due Mon 5/25: Complete 1.1, 1.2 and #1-3 on p. 15-16 (finish it now if you don't want homework over vacation); Due Fri 4/29: New Buzzmath assignments and new science IXL: B2, E4, G4, H2, I3, J4; Also, work on the quarter project - next check in is 5/2; Practice the online PARCC tests (use the link in the note above)

Wednesday: Conferences
Tuesday: After trying each main topic for a bit, write a paragraph indicating the order of your choices for the topic. Explain your reasoning. Bring the paragraph on Thursday for check in #1. Also, continue to review and practice the 2nd step skills - the paragraph for that is due Friday.
Monday: Read through the Quarter 4 project and start looking for patterns in your Pascal's Triangle; 2nd step - lesson 22: final lesson is a week long assignment. Pick a skill from the sheet each day to focus on - talk to family every night this week about how it went. Due Friday - write at least one paragraph about how your practice and your conversations went. Get the paragraph signed by a parent (parents can write a note too if they'd like to)
Week of 4/4-4/7

Wednesday 9/9: Science - Both classes - Finish Thumb War Lab with family; Room 300 had more time and was able to finish it in class so their homework is to either Repeat the Thumb War Lab with their family or come up with another simple experiment to do with family that could use the scientific method. Room 301 is welcome to come up with something additional if they would like to.
Tuesday 9/8: Science - number the pages of the science notebook in the bottom corner (front and back side). Math - create a "count the circles" problem similar to the math talk (draw an array of circles that don't form a completed rectangle so that there area multiple ways to count them). Must use 3 strategies to count the total number.
